Environment Protection Cell

The major functions of environmental protection cell include protection, conservation and management of the city. It also caters for the protection and conservation of forests, control of forest fires, afforestation of blank areas and development of the entire viewpoints and their maintenance.

Functions
  • Urban Division-I: Maintenance/development of green areas within the sectors between 3rd Avenue and Faisal Avenue through landscaping and floriculture.
  • Nursery Division: Production of trees, shrubs, ground covers, creepers ornamental plants and seasonal flowers seedlings
  • Parks Division: Maintenance/development of green areas along Shahrah-e-Islamabad, Shakar Parian and surroundings

Functions

The Environment Directorate (Regional) plays a crucial role in the protection, conservation, and management of the Margallah Hills National Park (MHNP) and carries out soil conservation activities in the catchment areas of Simly Dam. To effectively manage this diverse range of responsibilities, the Directorate is divided into two specialised divisions: the Forests Division and the Soil Conservation Division.

  • Forest Division:
    • The Forests Division operates across zone-III of Islamabad, where the Margalla Hills National Park was officially designated in 1980. This division is primarily responsible for safeguarding and preserving the natural environment within the park.
    • Protection and Conservation of Forests: Implementing measures to prevent illegal logging, encroachment, and other activities that pose a threat to the forest ecosystem within the MHNP.
    • Forest Fire Control: Taking proactive steps to prevent and manage forest fires, ensuring the safety of the park's flora and fauna.
    • Afforestation of Blank Areas: Initiating reforestation efforts to restore areas within the MHNP that have been previously deforested or are lacking in vegetation cover.
    • Development and Maintenance of Viewpoints: Enhancing the visitor experience by establishing and maintaining viewpoints that offer scenic vistas of the Margalla Hills, thus promoting eco-tourism and appreciation for the natural beauty of the park.
    • Maintenance/development of Margalla Hills National Park Area, located towards north of Margala road and Murree road (39,123 Acres)
  • Soil Conservation Unit:
    • The soil conservation unit focuses on the critical task of soil conservation in the catchment areas of Simly Dam. This division is vital for preserving the quality and integrity of soil in these areas, which in turn has far-reaching impacts on water quality and ecosystem health.
    • Management of Watershed/ Catchment Area of Simly Dam (135.68 Sq. Km. = 38000 Acres)

The sanitation directorate is entrusted with the crucial responsibility of ensuring the provision of adequate sanitation and efficient garbage disposal services within the municipal limits of Islamabad. On a daily basis, the directorate is tasked with the collection and transportation of approximately 600 tons of solid waste generated in the city.

The primary functions of the Directorate encompass:

  1. Sweeping: Maintaining cleanliness through sweeping activities.
  2. Door-to-Door Garbage Collection: Collecting waste from households and establishments.
  3. Transportation and Safe Disposal of Solid Waste: Safely transporting and disposing of collected solid waste.
  4. Managing Stray/Wild Dogs: Addressing the issue of stray or wild dogs within the city.
  5. Functioning and Maintenance of Public Toilets: Ensuring public toilets are operational and well-maintained.
  6. Clearance of Nullahs/Streams: Collaborating with the environment wing, directorate of roads, and directorate of maintenance to clear waterways and streams.
  7. Issuance of Notices/Challans for Littering and Water Abuse: Enforcing regulations by issuing notices and challans for littering and misuse of water resources.

The directorate of sanitation, a part of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), extends its sanitation services to various areas within the municipal limits of Islamabad, including:

  • Residential sectors
  • Industrial area
  • Model villages
  • Highways and avenues
  • Commercial/Blue areas
  • Faisal Masjid
  • Open spaces
  • Public Places: This includes popular locations such as Daman-e-Koh, Shakar Parian, Haj Complex, Industrial Exhibition, religious gatherings, and Melody Food Park.

By fulfilling these functions and serving diverse areas, the directorate plays a pivotal role in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of Islamabad, ensuring a healthy and pleasant environment for its residents and visitors.
