ISLAMABAD: A major step to promote environment-friendly public transport was taken in the federal capital as Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi inaugurated new electric buses, an electric bus depot, and a modern charging center in Islamabad. With the latest addition, the total number of electric buses operating in the city has reached 160. The Interior Minister also traveled on an electric bus along with officials and was given a detailed briefing about the fleet, depot, and charging infrastructure. Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Mohsin Naqvi congratulated the project team on its successful completion and said that around 125,000 citizens are currently using the electric bus service daily. He added that the target is to increase ridership to 250,000 passengers per day, with special attention given to routes serving male and female students. The minister also announced the extension of the electric bus service to Rawat, stating that the initiative, along with the metro system, is playing a key role in easing traffic congestion in Islamabad. He further shared that the Pindi-Islamabad railway service is being restored and that Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) will soon begin local production of electric buses in Pakistan. According to the briefing, the new depot has the capacity to install 64 chargers, of which 50 are currently operational, while 14 more will be installed soon. Each charger can fully charge two buses within approximately two hours. Electric buses are currently operating on 21 routes across Islamabad, and the system has been integrated with Google for improved passenger convenience. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Inspector General of Police Islamabad, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, and other senior officials.
